It was a very exciting day at the International Space Station. The world’s favorite space shuttle was about to lift off. “5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0!” the speakers boomed out. Then the rocket lifted off for the moon. As it left the earth’s atmosphere the pilot spotted the emergency light. “Look up! Can you see the huge asteroid field in our path which could send us on a one way trip back to earth?” They swerved, dodged and stopped until a huge asteroid hit the engine which exploded into pieces. Then the ship started plummeting to the earth! But the escape pod was released.
The Behind The News I did for this week was about 2014’s conflicts and other worries this year. This year many events around the world have occurred, which have caused death, sadness and many more horrible things. One of the biggest story’s which has happened in a country called Iraq, a group in Iraq called Islamic States have been going around concurring city’s and killing innocent people. So Australia has helped to air strike Islamic States along with many other countries. Also in Gaza fighting broke out between Israelis and Palestinians. During the battle over 2000 people lost their lives. Things also got pretty serious over in Ukraine because of an election, one side wanted it one way, the other side another way. Another disaster which shocked the world was the horrifying disaster of Malaysia airlines flight MH17 which was shot down over Ukraine. In total, 298 passengers died including 38 Australians. Most of the blame was on Russia who supplied the Surface air Missile which was used in the attack, but a few days before that another Malaysia airlines plane disappeared over the pacific ocean. Also this year we remember this year marks 100 years since the start of World War 1.When it finished millions of people died and thousands more wounded.
The Behind The News I did for this week was about women serving in World War 1. The 11th of November is known to us as Remembrance Day. On this day at 11 am people are asked to stop what they are doing and think about those who went and died in World War 1. On this day most people think of male soldiers who did all of the fighting but did you know that thousands of women who where nurses who put their lives on the line to assist us in World War 1. One women who was called Olive Hayse not only served as a nurse but survived World War 1. At the time women weren’t allowed to fight but even though they knew that they could be killed or wounded, they still wanted to help. Nurses like Olive traveled all over the battle fields to treat the sick and wounded. During the war the conditions where really tough and most of the time the medics didn’t have the right equipment and many died from sickness and injury. Olive went to France in 1916 where most of the fighting happened. They faced lots of dangers because they where close to the battlefields. Back home women took over many jobs that men would have done to help in the war. In 1917 Olive married a soldier and in 1918 she was finally allowed to come home from the battles of World War 1.
On a dark and stormy night a family where out camping when they heard something outside the tent. The whole family peeped their heads out of the zip and saw a large fury thing, as it shivered, the family had to get a closer look to see what is was. Suddenly they all realized that it was a bear! As they got some defenses like pots and pans they shined a torch on it, then the dad realized it was not anything scary but it was their puppy “Fred” who was sleeping outside.
The Behind the News I did for this week was about Music Education. Did you know that there is a government group who decides what you learn at school. Recently they did a review and agreed that a few areas should be changed. One of these areas was the arts programs. They thought that it would be a good decision because they think students should learn more music than drama and dance. The whole point of getting the students to learn more music is to get them excited about playing an instrument and to get the teachers to do more music lessons at school. Music is just one of the many subjects students learn at school. Music comes under the category of art along with drama, dance, visual arts and media arts. Do you think that kids should learn more about music and less of the other arts like drama and dance?
The Behind the News I did for this week was about making video games. We all know video games are a lot of fun to play, but have you ever thought of how much work gets put into creating a game? Also what types of video games do you like to play? Action, adventure, sport or a role playing game. The main type of game is a platform game, which is when your character has to run and make it to the goal by killing all enemy’s and not being killed, but before you start making your game you have to think of a story line for it. After you have your characters, story line and any other things you need you have to start using your green screen and you have to start your stop motion animation. A green screen is a wall of green paper that with some computer animations, you can get what ever background you want for your game, they are even used in creating movie backgrounds. Stop Motion Animation is when you take lots of photos, and in each one the person or thing is slowly moving. When you have enough photos you have a little mini movie. After you have done all those things… JUST PLAY!
The Behind The News I did for this week was about a beach Cricket program. It is getting closer to summer and beach cricket is the number 1 beach sport. An Aussie foundation has set up a beach cricket program to encourage kids to come to school each day. All the kids out playing Beach cricket all day sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. This program is not just a bunch of old matches of beach cricket because many of these kids have traveled miles to be involved in this cricket tournament in Cable Beach in the WA. The foundation started 15 years ago, with 1 academy, but now there are 59 academy’s and over 3000 kids participating. This program is also good for kids who wish to become cricket athletes. As part of the program students get coached and play in practices matches, then after a while they get to play in the cricket tournament.
The Behind the News I did for this week was based on the Iraq battle against Islamic states. Australian jet fighters and soldiers have been sent over to Iraq to fight and deal with a crazy rampaging group of people called Islamic States. Australia is not fighting this fight alone, but with America, the UK, France, Germany and many more nations. In 1901 Australia first became a nation and was involved in their first conflict which was the Boer War in South Africa.Australia has been involved in many other wars such as, World War 1, World War 2, the Korean war, the Vietnam war, the first Gulf War, Afghanistan and now the war in Iraq. But the Prime Minister is saying that this is not a war because of three reasons; we were asked to deal with Islamic states, to save Iraqi lives and we are doing the mission with other nations, so the way Australia is helping to deal with this group of people is by using Air Force jets to bomb the group and by sending over troops to deal with them face to face.
Over in a country called Iraq a group of rampaging people with guns called Islamic State have taken over city’s and done lots of horrible things, so Iraq’s government have asked for help. Australia and America have responded to their call. Australia’s Hercules war planes have a important job to do during this fight, sending supplies to the people who are suffering in this war, Australia is even sending guns and ammo to Iraq. When Iraq’s government cried for help America did some air strikes on the rampaging group. Even tho Australia is sending supplies, they are not fighting in this war. One way for Australia to help is by sending in Combat troops but the prime minister is refusing to do that. There have been many times when Australia have supplied weapons to other countries, it might be for political reasons, economic reasons or because they just think it is the right thing to do.
The Behind the News I did for this week was about the place where you donate your money after you have done the Ice Bucket Challenge. The Ice Bucket Challenge has drawn attention to people all around the world. Hundreds and thousands of people have become involved in the ice bucket challenge, but where does the donated money go? It goes towards research into a disease called Motor Neurone Disease or A,L,S for short. Motor Neurone Disease is when your nerves that are connected to your brain, and which controls the muscles, stop working, which leaves your body paralyzed and unable to move. Eventually it makes it hard to swallow or breathe. Doctors are trying to find a cure and trying to work out how the disease starts. The more money raised by The Ice Bucket Challenge, the more research can be done to try and find a cause and more importantly a cure for this horrible disease.
